Research & Planning: Award Wreaths Poster
In this first version of the theatrical release poster, the designers of this poster included 3 film festival logos along the top showing where the film has been premiered and where it has recognition, persuading the audience and fellow film critics to go and observe the film.
In the main theatrical release poster for Whiplash along the top is one major award that the film won at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. This is displayed more subtly in the same font but in a sharper colour.
Fish Tank had many theatrical release posters and this one was a perfect example to show the different types of ways to dipslay recognition, reviews and awards.
In the top left are quotes and star ratings from well known sources. At the top right are 2 logos, 1 being a festival the film was showed at and the bottom is a WREATH showing off the win it had at the festival.
The landscape theatrical release poster for Submarine is very similar to Fish Tank but less cluttered.
This poster includes star ratings and review quotes again from well known sources.
At the bottom left are 4 wreath's presenting the awards the film has won but in a subtle way since they don't take up much space.
On my poster I will be included wreaths to show it's possible success at independent (mainly) British film festivals. As a group we decided to include quotes and star ratings within the trailer so to avoid cluttering up my minimal poster I will only be using award wreaths.

Research & Planning: Compulsory Features to include
From reflecting on my AS work last year, I remembered that there are certain features to include when creating a magazine front cover for example:
-Barcode
-Price
-Issue number
-Date
-Strapline
I looked at some Independent film magazines and some don't include some of these conventional features but to stick to the norm I included all of the above.
In terms of a film poster (something I have never made before) things to include would be:
-Certificate
-Credits
-Production/Distribution companies
-Film website
Again I decided to keep to the norm and use all of these features within my own poster.
The rest is up to creativity.

Research & Planning: Third group meeting: Tagline
As a group we brainstormed some words relating to our character and our basic trailer idea.
We did this after titling our film to see if we wanted a longer tagline and a short snappy one and since our title is one word long we had a bit more le-way with the length of tagline.
We chose words that stood out to us and went from there with taglines.
The ones we were choosing from were:
Second chances don't come very often.
Break the boundaries
Mixed emotions. Mixed results.
Music is the key
Talent doesn't come easy
There is always a price for talent
LIVE DREAM DARE
In the end we decided that Second chances don't come very often rolled off the tongue better and was more appropriate for our trailer.

Research & Planning: Updated Production Company Logo
As a group we decided the old "Key Productions" logo wasn't good enough and was too plain.
We still wanted to keep a simple logo, but change up the black and white.
So we decided on a plae blue to tie in with the blue tones in some of the clips throughout the trailer.
Also instead of just using a flate image we decided to add a few drop shadows to the key.

Also instead of just using a flate image we decided to add a few drop shadows to the key.
We got a silhouette of a key that had interesting shapes inside. We filled the key in white instead of black, since the black was far too harsh. We added a drop shadow to the white key to begin with.
Then we filled the cut out shapes in a muted navy blue colour and selected all of them and added a second drop shadow to them which gives the two tone shadow.
We also changed the background to the pale blue to go with the muted navy colour.
We then added our text using a simple font so that it doesn't take away from the patterns within the key, and chose the darkest shadow colour so that the text paired with the logo.

Research & Planning: Second Film Poster Draft
This is my second film poster draft and the one I am going to end up using and completing.
The idea is to show his two personalities and sides to his life.
On the left is his working class, rough, upsetting everyday life.
On the right is his smart, talented and elevating passion.
I have taken inspiration from the Submarine film poster, by the colour scheme I will be using.
The character images are both mid shots one in his everyday clothing the other in his suit.
The actors names are displayed the same across the top and the title of the film will float around in the clouds.
The clouds are there as a partial background as a metaphor saying "his head is in the sky" meaning he dreams for something bigger than he is.
The two strips across the middle of the poster will be block colours the larger one in blue and the smaller one in red to show his varied and contrasting emotions.
The credits and social media links are displayed along the bottom.
The existing poster I took inspiration from:
These are the photos I will be using to represent my character:
Research & Planning: First Film Poster Draft
This first film poster draft is quite simple.
It involves our character opening his suit jacket showing an aura of confidence.
The main actors names are across the top and underneath the title of the film in the same font we've been using throught the trailer.
Along the bottom are the main credits including directors and editors. Also the social media links and website link.
The blank space around the top left and bottom left will be black as if he is in the theatre background.
This is the photo I will be using:

Production: Canteen Original Takes
Another part of our cycle are scenes in the canteen, showing a conversation taking place, but through the shoulders of the two girls our main character looking stressed, and a lot less happy than the girls. We used this short scene to show the contrast between the two types of people in the college environment.
Research & Planning: Canteen Props and Costume (Other Characters)
In this scene there are two minor characters: Laura (left) and Kadie (right)
They are playing two typical college girls, talking, laughing and not paying attention to their surroundings e.g. our main character.
They both have their iPhones on the table to show they are more interested in social media than their college work.
Laura is wearing a white blouse, naturally pretty makeup and curled hair, to show she cares about her appearance and has time to do so.
Kadie is wearing simple clothing to show a more diverse type of character compared to Laura, however they both are sporting big smiles showing no stress or frustration, they are enjoying each others company.
The two characters are here to show a contrast between their personalities and our main characters personality.
Research & Planning: Canteen Props and Costume
The main piece of paper with the writing on is a simple mind map of what his audition piece would be called, and the other pieces of paper are college work he is putting off doing and crumpled up pieces of paper to show mistakes.
Costume:
Our character is wearing creased shirt. The checked shirt is widely available has no specific branding which shows it is cheaper and easily accessible to those without much money.

Production: Premiere Pro editing: Paper Planes
Previously I have explained the use of the paper plane as a metaphor for our chaaracter's life. We wanted a way to add a review quote but not just a plain screen so we decided to use the movement of the plane as a transition and layer a review over the top.
The throwing of the paper plane lasted around 3 seconds which isn't long enough to read the quote, so we lengthened the duration of the clip and altered the speed as an expansion of time.

Production: Paper plane Original Takes
We took some very short shots of me and aisha throwing paper planes towards each other in blue toned lighting. The lighting corresponds with some other scenes in the trailer, so this will tie in well to the rest of the trailer. The paper plane has also already been used in the classroom to show the other students' freedom and carelessness.
I wanted to use the paper plane as a transition or fading in the background in a faster pace part of our trailer as a metaphor.
Once a paper plane has some power it can go anywhere it pleases, it will fly higher and fly lower depending on how much power is given.
If Dan gets support and motivates himself he can also fly and succeed wherever he pleases, it all depends on how much faith he has in himself.
I feel that the paper plane can relate to our characters life really easily, so having this object flying through the background of some of the shots could help promote a recurring theme.
These last 2 clips are the ones we could possibly use. We will slow the clips down so that the flight spans over a longer period of time.

Production: Interview Original Takes
This is the final scene in the trailer showing the crucial interview and leaving the audience on a cliff hanger to see if he succeeds or fails. The voiceover alongside this scene hears Dan perking up and becoming very sarcastic and slightly confident ending the trailer on a positive note.
Although these scenes all have conversation in them they will be muted so the voiceover stands out, the clips are all about the body language and expression.

Research & Planning: Interview Props and Costume
Rob Costume:
Complete suit and tie, simple suit nothing extravagant.
Gary Costume;
As Gary is a music lecturer his clothing doesn't have to be too smart. Most lecturers in the Arts wear smart casual and comfortable clothing. So Gary is wearing a thick jumper, smart t-shirt his teaching badge, glasses and smart trousers and shoes.
The only props for this scene were pieces of paper represting an application form and an extra chair for Rob to sit at.
This scene focuses more on the body language and voice over.

Research & Planning: Editing Log
This is part of our editing log for some of the main scenes which needed a lot of cutting, and added extras. Within this log we have mentioned the Vlog scene where it would have to be cut in the middle and also have a recording symbol layered over the top, so we logged the whole photoshop process. Another scene we chose to include in the log was the History Classroom where we use a pan shot and sped up the clip by lowering the duration, and finally we mentioned the Train scene where we experimented and added a light flare which we took from the Submarine film trailer.

Research & Planning: Film Magazine Drafts
This is my first idea for a film magazine.
After getting feedback and playing about with various titles I chose the title Perspective, this means I don't have to keep my magazine to just film and can include TV shows and stage performances.
I chose my cover lines around the present time, which is why I included a cover line featuring the 2016 Oscar's and a feature on the film Deadpool since it has and will be popular with my age group and older.
I took inspiration from this issue of Empire, including one main image and minimal cover lines.
I have also taken inspiration from this issue of Empire by including a large band across the bottom however mine only goes half way across the magazine. I also included a circle stamp surrounding a coverline like this issue has.

Research & Planning: Social Media Feedback: Magazine Names
I asked my friends and my mum what they thought of the names I had thought of for an independent film magazine.
My mum said that she liked CINEVUE AND FLICKS
Hannah (above) initially said she liked perspective and focus, but once I showed her some inspiration I was going off she said she still liked perspective but instead preferred filmfocus.
Paige (above) said she liked Cinevue and Focus, and also Vision+.
Aisha above said that she preferred Perspective over most of the other titles because it was quite an "indie" name meaning it would be perfect for my style of magazine, especially for a maturer audience.
I took these into consideration and tried fitting the names around my second film poster draft and realised that perspective worked best as the magazine on a whole is more mature and professional, so the title needs to match that aim too.
